SSE

Cloud-first hosting to streamline energy compliance

  • Cloud modernisation and hosting for a regulatory-facing platform
  • Reduced bottle necks from internal security controls
  • Improved system reliability, performance and support
  • Aligned to SSE’s strict architectural standards

Challenge

SSE is one of the UK’s largest and most important energy providers. As a FTSE 100 company with more than 10,000 employees, it plays a central role in electricity generation and distribution, including large-scale wind, gas and storage infrastructure.

SSE needed support with a system running on non-cloud native infrastructure used to publish planned energy generation outages, a regulatory requirement that ensures transparency across the sector.

Hosted on internal virtual machines, the system required regular OS-level updates and was bound by complex access restrictions. Onboarding developers could take months, and SSE’s internal teams were keen to reduce the time and cost associated with ongoing maintenance.

Alongside performance and compliance, SSE was also looking to introduce Single Sign-On (SSO) and maintain external integrations with key platforms such as Nord Pool and Elexon.

Solution

Propel Tech proposed a cloud-first solution, rehosting the application within our own managed Azure infrastructure. This approach reduced technical friction, met strict compliance requirements, and aligned with SSE’s internal cloud blueprint.

We migrated the application from existing virtual machines to Azure App Services and replaced manually installed SQL Server instances with fully managed Azure SQL. For the admin portal, we implemented Single Sign-On via Microsoft Entra ID.

To ensure ongoing compliance and data distribution, we maintained SSE’s external data feeds and regulatory RSS updates. We also established staging, UAT and production environments with secure access controls, supporting both the public-facing portal and internal admin tool under a fully managed service model.

Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with SSE’s cloud architecture team to ensure everything matched their internal standards.

Impact

By modernising its hosting strategy, SSE gained a more secure and resilient application with significantly lower maintenance overhead. The move to managed services eliminated the need for regular OS-level updates and simplified system access, helping to cut down onboarding time and improve operational efficiency.

With Propel managing the platform, SSE's internal teams have more time to focus on higher-value work. The solution also supports a seamless user experience, with no change to public-facing functionality and no disruption during the transition.

The collaborative approach ensured the project stayed on track, with go-live aligned to internal milestones. With 24/7 support in place and a future-ready platform now live, SSE can rely on Propel to keep things running smoothly while reducing the internal burden.
