Accelerating Action: Women at Propel Tech celebrate International Women's Day 2025
At Propel Tech, we're celebrating International Women's Day 2025 with a focus on the theme of "Accelerate Action." We believe that empowering women in the tech industry isn't just about supporting them today, but also about creating pathways for future generations of women to succeed.
We're proud to have a diverse and talented team of women who are excelling in various roles - from software testing to project management, HR, marketing, and communications. In honour of this year’s theme, some of our female team members have shared their thoughts on how we can support the next generation of women in tech, and how we can continue to accelerate action by opening doors and sharing knowledge.
Maryam Ali - Test Analyst: Embrace curiosity and diversity in tech
Maryam’s journey into tech started at an early age when she saved up money to buy her first computer. Her curiosity about how things work led her to study Computer Science, and she has since built a rewarding career in software testing.
For young women considering a role in tech, Maryam's advice is simple: Follow your curiosity. "Tech is not just about coding, it’s about solving problems, innovating, and making an impact. There’s space for you, whether you're interested in technical roles, project management, HR, or marketing. The industry thrives on diverse skills, and your unique perspective is valuable."
She encourages businesses to take practical steps such as creating visible role models, introducing mentorship programs, and ensuring inclusive work environments where women have a voice at the table. “Tech is evolving, and the more we invest in inclusivity, the stronger and more innovative the industry becomes."
Hannah Starkey - HR Manager: Widening horizons and building knowledge

Hannah’s path into the tech sector was somewhat unexpected, having come from a background in construction and engineering. However, she quickly found the tech industry full of opportunities for learning and growth.
Her advice to young women is to not shy away from the unknown. "Tech isn’t just about being 'techy', it’s about understanding how things work and being part of the solution. If you’re interested, start by learning from those around you. Techy people love to share their knowledge and will help you understand the intricacies of the industry."
Hannah also highlights the importance of early exposure to tech for young girls, encouraging schools, businesses, and parents to develop an interest in coding and technology from a young age. “Don’t assume tech is only for those who love video games, there are countless roles in tech that require different skill sets."
Sally Chuku - Head of Marketing: Diversifying tech roles for women

For Sally, working in marketing within a tech business is both challenging and exciting. “The tech sector is changing fast, and with the rise of AI, there are always new ways to communicate and market tech. It’s an industry that constantly demands innovation and problem-solving."
Sally’s message to women considering a role in tech is that there are many opportunities beyond traditional 'techy' roles. "There’s a misconception that tech is a cold, isolated environment, but my experience at Propel Tech has been the opposite. The people here are collaborative, thoughtful, and supportive. I encourage women to explore the many non-technical roles in tech, such as marketing and HR."
Sally also believes businesses should work to change how they present tech roles to ensure they appeal to a wider audience. “Women bring different viewpoints to the table, and this diversity is essential for tackling tech challenges effectively."
Claire Anderson - Comms Manager: Normalising women in tech
With years of experience in marketing across various industries, Claire finds working in tech to be the most rewarding. "Tech influences every aspect of people’s lives today, whether they realise it or not. It’s a sector that offers endless opportunities for growth and creativity."
Claire’s advice for women who don't see themselves as ‘techy’ is clear: "Your experience as a tech user is just as valuable as technical expertise. Whether you’re in marketing, HR, or project management, you’re contributing to the success of tech businesses. It’s all about understanding the value you bring."
To accelerate change, Claire highlights the importance of showcasing women in the industry, not just as a token effort, but as an integral part of the tech landscape. "We need to normalise women in tech roles. By doing so, we can show the next generation of young women that tech is for everyone."
Danielle Mistry - Senior Project Manager: Building confidence and embracing challenges

Danielle's interest in tech began early, influenced by her father, who was an IT director. She eventually moved into project management, where she thrives in driving forward complex tech projects.
Her advice for young women is to not be deterred by job descriptions. "Women often hesitate to apply for roles because they think they need to meet every requirement. But most job descriptions are a wishlist. Don’t be afraid to apply. Be honest about your strengths and areas for development. You may be exactly what the employer is looking for."
Danielle believes that tech businesses must continue to highlight the breadth of roles in the industry. “There are so many paths in tech beyond development, from project management to communications. Women should see that there are opportunities for everyone.”
Lyndsay Dale - Project Manager: Confidence in your skills and abilities
Lyndsay’s background in public sector tech projects led her to project management, and she now manages complex software development projects with ease. "You don’t have to be a tech expert to succeed in tech. As a project manager, I’m usually the least ‘techy’ person in the room, but I bring valuable skills that contribute to the company’s success."
For women interested in the tech sector, Lyndsay advises: “Confidence is key. You don’t need to know everything to make a difference. And don’t be afraid to get involved in tasks that interest you. Your curiosity and willingness to learn will take you far."
