Six answers to the question every enterprise buyer asks about AI coding

AI coding tools are becoming part of everyday development. But for organisations with systems and compliance obligations, one question comes up quickly: how do you make sure AI-assisted development is safe? Our Technology & Solutions Director, Wil Jones, explains the controls and engineering discipline that make it work.

AI-assisted coding has moved from novelty to normality remarkably quickly. Tools that can generate working code in seconds are now part of everyday development workflows across the industry.

That speed is powerful, but it also raises understandable questions. Surveys from organisations such as GitHub and Stack Overflow show that a growing majority of developers are now using AI coding tools in some form. At the same time, security researchers have demonstrated that AI-generated code can introduce vulnerabilities if it is accepted without proper scrutiny.

Because of that, conversations with enterprise organisations tend to follow a familiar pattern.

It starts with curiosity about what AI-assisted development can do. Then the discussion quickly focuses on one core question.

"This sounds promising, but how do you make sure it's safe?"

It is a fair question, and it deserves a clear answer.

Here is how we approach it.

The risk is real. So is the hype around it.

AI coding tools can produce plausible-looking code that contains security holes, leaks data, introduces subtle logic errors, or violates compliance requirements. Any team telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.

But the answer is not to avoid AI tools entirely. The answer is to use them inside a proper engineering discipline. The same discipline you would expect from any serious consultancy, with additional controls that reflect how AI tools behave.

1. AI writes code. Humans own it.

Every line of code produced with AI assistance goes through the same review process as code written by hand. In many cases it receives more scrutiny, not less.

Our developers treat AI output as a capable but junior contributor - useful, fast and often helpful, but still something that needs to be checked carefully. The developer who accepts a piece of AI-generated code is accountable for it; that accountability does not transfer to the tool.

This sounds obvious, but it is worth stating plainly…In a professional engineering environment, ‘the AI did it’ is not an explanation for faulty software.

2. Nothing sensitive goes into the prompt and the tools we use do not store what does

Our team is trained on what not to share with AI tools. Credentials, production data and personally identifiable information stay out of model inputs.

Where AI assistance is used on code that touches sensitive systems, we work with sanitised or abstracted examples.

Beyond training and practice, the tools we use are configured so that prompts and outputs are not retained at rest or fed back into shared training models. What goes into the tool for a task does not become part of a vendor’s dataset.

For organisations operating in regulated environments, that distinction is important.

3. We treat AI output as untrusted input

AI-generated code receives the same scrutiny we would apply to any third-party dependency.

Does it do what it claims?
Does it do anything else?
Are there edge cases the author, human or AI, did not consider?

To answer those questions we combine static analysis tools, automated testing and manual review.

AI tools can miss race conditions, mishandle errors or produce code that passes obvious tests but fails under real production scenarios. Identifying those issues is part of the review process.

4. Dependency and supply chain hygiene

AI tools can recommend packages, libraries or patterns that are outdated, unmaintained or known to contain vulnerabilities.

We verify every dependency that enters a codebase, whether it was suggested by a developer, a tutorial or an AI model.

The rule is simple. We do not import something because the model suggested it, we import it because it has been checked and approved.

5. Good engineering practices are what make AI output trustworthy

The reason AI-assisted development works at scale is not the AI itself, it is the engineering discipline around it.

Practices such as test-driven development keep generated code honest. When tests are written first, the AI has a clear definition of success and the output must satisfy those requirements.

Continuous integration and deployment pipelines catch regressions before they reach production. Code review ensures that generated logic aligns with the broader architecture of the system.

Principles such as clear separation of concerns, sound architecture and maintainable design do not become less important when AI is involved. If anything, they matter more.

AI can produce a large amount of code very quickly, but without strong engineering practices, that simply increases the surface area for problems.

6. We train developers on where the new bottleneck actually is

One thing many teams underestimate when adopting AI coding tools is how the bottleneck changes.

Code generation becomes faster and code review becomes the constraint.

Reviewing AI-generated code is a different skill to writing code from scratch. It requires holding the system in your head and analysing what the code is trying to achieve, whether it actually does that, and whether it introduces behaviour that was never requested.

In many ways it is closer to architecture and analysis than it is to typing code.

We train our developers on this explicitly. Giving someone a more powerful tool is not enough on its own, the mindset shift, from author to reviewer, from writing to orchestrating, has to be deliberate.

What this looks like in practice

The controls described above are not a separate "AI safety layer" that gets added at the end of a project. They are embedded in how we work day to day. They appear in our code review standards, our developer onboarding and the way we structure client engagements.

For organisations operating in regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare or utilities, we also discuss additional requirements at the start of a project. Data classifications, compliance expectations and any restrictions on tools or cloud services all influence how we set up the development environment from the beginning.

That conversation shapes the project, it does not get retrofitted later.

The honest version of the speed story

AI-assisted development genuinely can accelerate delivery - projects that might previously have taken months can move forward in weeks.

But that speed comes from reducing mechanical work. Boilerplate code, scaffolding and routine test generation can be handled quickly, which frees developers to focus on the decisions that require judgement.

Speed without discipline would simply create risk faster.

The reason AI-assisted development works in serious environments is that the discipline does not change when the pace increases. The review still happens, the questions still get asked, and the generated code still receives the same critical eye as anything written by hand.

That is not a limitation on what AI tools can do, it is what makes it possible to use them on projects.
