Mental health awareness week 2026: Bespoke AI software systems put wellbeing into action

This year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme is Action, a powerful reminder that supporting mental wellbeing in the workplace requires more than conversation. It requires organisations to actively design healthier ways of working.

At Propel Tech, our 2026 Future of Software research suggests that employees are becoming increasingly clear about what they want technology to deliver. For our report, The future of bespoke software in the AI era, we surveyed more than 1,000 professionals, from senior executives to frontline employees, asking one simple question: "How should software improve life in 2026?"

The results, which build on two previous years of data, reveal a striking finding. For employees, the number one priority for software was wellbeing and balance, above collaboration, above training and development, above every other workplace technology priority.

At the same time, businesses continue to focus on efficiency, analytics, and competitive advantage. This gap creates one of the defining opportunities for bespoke software and AI in the years ahead: what we're calling the wellbeing opportunity.

The wellbeing opportunity for bespoke software

As organisations accelerate digital transformation, there is growing recognition that technology cannot simply make work faster without also making it healthier. Unlike off-the-shelf platforms designed for generic use cases, bespoke software gives organisations the ability to build technology around the actual needs of their people, culture, and ways of working.

In practice, this can mean:

  • Intelligent workload management tools that help prevent burnout
  • AI-powered scheduling systems that encourage healthier work patterns
  • Collaboration platforms designed to reduce digital overwhelm
  • Wellbeing dashboards that help employees track balance and workload
  • Automation of repetitive administrative tasks that contribute to fatigue and stress

The goal is not simply replacing human effort with software or AI. It is using bespoke solutions to remove friction, reduce pressure, and create space for more meaningful work, which in turn improves retention, innovation, and long-term organisational resilience.

Creating healthier workplaces through bespoke software

At Propel Tech, we have seen firsthand how bespoke software can support not only operational efficiency but also healthier working environments.

One example is our work with Prime Systems, where bespoke technology has been developed to help organisations simplify health and safety management, reduce operational friction, and improve visibility across complex workplace environments. The platform enables businesses to digitise processes such as incident reporting, compliance monitoring, audits, inspections, and risk assessments, helping teams reduce repetitive administrative pressures while improving responsiveness and accountability.

Importantly, the impact extends beyond compliance. By creating clearer workflows, reducing uncertainty, and enabling proactive issue management, the software helps reduce cognitive overload for both employees and managers. In high-pressure environments, having the right digital systems in place can create more structured, transparent, and psychologically safer ways of working. Read the case study

AI tools supporting workplace wellbeing

Across the broader technology landscape, platforms are already evolving to support employee mental health more proactively.

Tools such as Headspace for Work, Unmind, Modern Health, and Calm Business provide on-demand mental wellbeing support, burnout prevention resources, mental health coaching, and personalised wellbeing journeys. And companies such as Diageo have introduced AI-powered platforms to offer confidential mental health support and stress management tools across global teams.

AI is also increasingly being used to identify workplace friction points that contribute to stress and disengagement, helping organisations take preventative action earlier.

From awareness to action

Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us that awareness without action changes very little. For businesses investing in AI and bespoke software, this is an opportunity to rethink what workplace technology should truly achieve: healthier organisations, sustainable performance, and better human experiences.

Earlier this year, Propel Tech surveyed more than 1,000 professionals to understand how software should improve life in 2026.
